To live a Divine Life is to be human first
The lofty ideal of 'Divine Life' has its humble beginning in the building of a true human being, even as the fine superstructure has its small start in the foundation. Just as the strength of a building depends on its foundation which remains silent and invisible, so is the achievement of the Divine dependent on the strenuous preparation of man, to annihilate the animal in him, to develop the human nature and to allow it to blossom into Godliness.

This will decide what we are
Thus there is no Divine Life without one being, or trying to become, human first, and one cannot claim to be a human being merely because he walks on two legs and talks with his tongue. It is our attitude, our behaviour and our dealings with others that go to decide whether we are humans, sub-humans or superhumans. What is our attitude to our fellow-beings, to ourselves and to the Creator? This will decide what we are.
The necessary transformation and the attraction
Hence the noble Mission of Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj was to bring about the needed transformation in man, to gradually eradicate the animal in him and to unfold the Divinity within to its perfection. This transformation is needed by everyone, irrespective of caste, creed, colour, country, sex, position high or low, and the Society therefore attracts seeking souls from all walks of life and from every corner of this land Down Under.

Getting involved
Living the Divine Life as prescribed by H.H. Swami Sivananda is more important that being a card carrying member. Active involvement in the various programs is key to gaining the benefit of being affiliated to the organisation. Formal membership is encouraged if you derive benefit.
Anyone devoted to the ideals of truth, non-violence and purity can become a member of the Divine Life Society which is a non-sectarian institution, embodying in its wide perspective the common fundamental principles of all the religions of the world, and of spiritual life in general. The Society accords equal place of honour to all faiths and religious traditions, and its members recognize no distinction or disruptive sentiment on account of each other’s different traditional background, or religious affiliation, all which the principles and the philosophy and teachings of the Society do integrate. Through the pages of the various books and journals of the Society, what is endeavoured is to reveal the secret of spiritual action, namely that it lies in the Knowledge of the true Self and in the effacement and transcendence of the ego; and to present H.H. Swami Sivananda’s profound teachings that each soul is potentially divine and that everyone’s goal is to strive to manifest this divinity within by controlling the internal and external nature by ‘being good and doing good’. Anyone with the above ideals is welcome to become a member of the Divine Life Society.

Hilary Perry-Keene of Queensland
Though His Holiness Swami Sivananda never set foot on Australian soil his wisdom and influence had reached these shores many years ago. The Divine Life Society has it's Headquarters in the foothills of the Himalayas in Rishikesh. Swami Sivananda used to say, "Where there is sugar the ants are sure to come." To prove these words seekers of truth from all corners of the world flocked to the banks of the river Ganges and more specifically to Ananda Kutir to listen and learn from this English speaking sage.

Not wanting to be left out even our continent "Down-under" received her share of the blessings of this great master via his disciples. One such is Hilary Perry-Keene who now resides in Mount Malloy, Queensland.

In her own words: "I first went to stay at Rishikesh and met his Holiness Swami Sivananda Maharaj in 1956…This was an unforgettable experience. The loving warmth of Swamiji and a feeling of happiness in his ashram and in his presence, gave me what I believe was a rise in consciousness, and I had many wonderful experiences, as, so I was told, had many other people."

Subsequently Hilary visited Rishikesh many times. After leading a divine life for many years, in 1985 Hilary went back with her husband. "During our visit we sought and were granted affiliation of our branch here (Malloy Sivananda Ashram) with the Mother Ashram in India."

The following notice appeared in the March issue of the Divine Life Magazine of 1986 under the heading "Overseas Branches in Australia."

"Molloy Mountain Sivananda Ashram. The newly affiliated Branch has been functioning...under the able guidance of Mrs. Hilary and Roger…Regular bhajans, meditation, Hatha Yoga, spiritual talks, and evening satsang [are] conducted"

Since then other Divine Life Society branches have sprung up all over Australia. Currently these are located in Mount Malloy, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne. In addition there are several centres that were inspired by H. H. Swami Sivananda's disciples such as Swami Venketesanada and Swami Vishnudevananda.
